The readings are Psalm 122, Genesis 6:11-22, Matthew 24:1-22
The general theme of these three texts was tribulation among the people on earth and the future destruction that God will bring in order to restore life in the future. Another subject that come through was salvation.
" For behold, I will bring a flood of waters upon the earth to destroy all flesh in which is the breath of life under heaven. Everything that is on the earth shall die. 18 But I will establish my covenant with you, and you shall come into the ark, you, your sons, your wife, and your sons' wives with you. 19 And of every living thing of all flesh, you shall bring two of every sort into the ark to keep them alive with you." Gen 9:17-19
" “Then they will deliver you up to tribulation and put you to death, and you will be hated by all nations for my name's sake. 10 And then many will fall away[a] and betray one another and hate one another. 11 And many false prophets will arise and lead many astray. 12 And because lawlessness will be increased, the love of many will grow cold. 13 But the one who endures to the end will be saved. 14 And this gospel of the kingdom will be proclaimed throughout the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come."" Matt 24:9-14
I took reference from the book "The Continuum of Encyclopedia of Symbols" by Udo Becker, to see what sorts of symbols were used to represent tribulation. The thistle is a symbol that has been used through the ages for tribulation, sorrow, the sufferings of Christ and the matrys, and the prickles of the thistles also represented as a repellent against the enemy - a symbol of protection (p. 300).
Fire was another symbol used for destruction, war and divine well, as well as it's common association for purifying and renewing (p. 113).
So I combined these two symbols together to capture the essence of today's readings.
